Who is the General Optical Council?
The General Optical Council (GOC) is a regulatory organisation of dispensing opticians and optometrists (ophthalmic opticians) in the United Kingdom. The GOC sets standards that each registered practitioner must adhere to. If these standards are not met, the GOC can investigate and bring disciplinary proceedings.
The GOC can investigate a wide range of allegations including (not exhaustive):
- Failure to diagnose
- Late diagnosis
- Loss of vision
- Delayed referrals
- Poor care
- Damaging laser eye surgery
If the GOC decides that a registrant’s fitness to practice is impaired, it has a number of sanctions at its disposal which it can impose including:
- Erasure from the register – preventing an optometrist/dispensing optician from practicing
- Suspension from the register – likely to remain in force until a review hearing takes place to decide whether a registrant should remain suspended or if other sanctions should be imposed
- Conditional registration
- Financial penalty
