Cost of Divorce and Civil Partnership Dissolution
There is a misconception that obtaining a divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership through a solicitor will cost a lot of money. The truth is that in most cases the parties to the relationship are agreed that it is over. The divorce or dissolution process simply formalises that agreement and brings the relationship to an end.
The processes are clear and defined. A petition is issued and served upon the Respondent. The Respondent files an acknowledgement of service and this is sent to the Petitioner by the Court. The Petitioner then applies for the Decree Nisi of divorce or Conditional Order in dissolution of civil partnership and once that is granted by the court, the Petitioner must wait 6 weeks and 1 day to apply for the Decree Absolute of divorce or Final Order of civil partnership dissolution.
It takes approximately 4 – 6 months for the process to complete. Cartwright King Solicitors offer a fixed fee divorce package for those cases which are suitable. The cost is £540 inclusive of VAT. In addition there is the court fee to pay. People on a low income or benefit income may be able to apply to the court for a reduction in the court fee and in some circumstances will not have to pay a court fee at all. There are sometimes additional costs if the papers have to be served on a Respondent for example.
Alongside the divorce process there may be matters that need to be resolved such as financial arrangements or arrangements for children. The cost of these matters can sometimes be agreed on a fixed fee basis.
Not all cases are suitable for a fixed fee. In these cases we will work with you to ensure that the cost is kept at a level that you can manage and afford.
