HMRC Raid Newcastle Football Club and West Ham Football Club
The BBC reports that HMRC has conducted a large scale operation targeting tax evasion by individuals at Newcastle United and West Ham. Dawn raids conducted by over 180 personnel in the UK and abroad have led to the arrests of several individuals working within professional football.
Allegations of corruption and criminality within the national game are nothing new; as recently as last year, allegations by the Daily Telegraph against Sam Allardyce cost him his job as England manager. However, the latest action taken by the UK tax authorities marks a significant raising of the stakes by HMRC who suffered an embarrassing and high profile defeat in their last attempt to prosecute football figures for tax evasion, the 2010 prosecution of former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric, Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp and then Chief Executive Peter Storrie.
Cartwright King successfully acted for Mandaric in that flawed prosecution.
Steve Kirby, Head of Tax at Cartwright King commented:
“Today’s dawn raid of Newcastle and West Ham football clubs show the continued drive by HMRC to investigate suspected tax fraud. The international scope and ever increasing scale complexity of finance within the football industry has obviously continued to attract scrutiny from the authorities.”
