Landlord’s checking scheme to pilot in the West Midlands

The government has announced that the new landlord checking service to avoid illegal immigrants being able to rent property has been announced to start on the 1st of Dec 2014 as a pilot in the West Midlands.

What this means for all landlords or agents acting on behalf of landlords in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall and Sandwell will have a duty to make checks on any new tenants who sign a new tenancy agreement after this date, retain copies and report tenants who have no right to rent or lost their right.

Those falling fowl of this duty face severe civil penalties.

For advice, please contact any one of our specialist team in Birmingham who can provide you with assistance or give you an appointment at their city centre office.
