ACAS has published new Guidance on Age Discrimination to help employers, line managers and staff avoid unlawful age discrimination. Age is one of nine “protected characteristics” under The Equality Act 2010. (The others being sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion & belief, gender reassignment, being pregnant or on maternity leave, being married or in a civil partnership). This new Guidance covers how age discrimination can happen in the workplace, how to prevent it, how to eradicate bias and unlawful stereotyping against older and younger workers and how different treatment because of age can be allowed in very limited circumstances.
