Frequently asked questions.

If your child has been refused admission to a school of your preferred choice, you can appeal the decision, which will be reviewed by an independent panel.

Appealing an admission refusal often hinges on proving that a school failed to properly apply its admissions criteria, which means that your child would have been offered a place had the school applied its policy correctly, or by demonstrating that the decision to refuse your child admission was totally unreasonable or based on discrimination.

The independent panel will consider your case, taking into account the needs of your child and how it affects the school if all admission places have already been filled.

A decision is then made, which is legally binding, and there’s no further right to appeal. However, a judicial review may be available to you.

An admissions appeal often needs to be made within 20 school days of being notified that your child has not been granted a place at a school that’s your preferred option. Due to the strict timeframes, it’s worth getting in touch with our specialist Education Law team to submit your appeal properly and within the given deadline.

Yes. In fact, you’re encouraged to attend the hearing in order to present your case personally. We are able to represent you at an appeal hearing to ensure that your case is properly presented.

If you don’t attend, the hearing will proceed in your absence and written evidence that you have submitted will be heard by the panel and a representative of the school Governing Body.

While it is better if you attend, your case will be given equal consideration in your absence.
