Skilled Worker Visa

If you are an overseas national who has been offered a job by a UK employer with a sponsorship licence, you will need to apply for a Skilled Worker Visa (Tier 2). For your application to be successful, you must match the criteria below:

  • You must have a formal job offer from a UK employer (20 points)
  • You must have a certificate of sponsorship by the future employer (20 points)
  • Your salary must be above a certain minimum for the role
  • You must have a minimum of B1 level of proficiency in English (10 points)
  • You must provide evidence that you can financially support your stay in the UK
  • You may also be required to provide a tuberculosis certificate

To collect the necessary eligibility points as a Skilled Worker Visa applicant you must acquire at least 70 points on the eligibility criteria. In addition to the 50 mandatory points described above, you can collect the remaining 20 in different ways. For example, a PhD in some areas or a high salary can bring you an additional 10-20 points.

For additional information and help with your Skilled Worker Visa application, please do not hesitate to contact our solicitors in Sheffield on 0114 321 1000.

Travel Visa

If you are planning to take a trip to the UK there are many reasons to visit Sheffield, whether it’s to learn about the history of the Steel City during the Industrial Revolution or explore the Peak District National Park. Home to Sheffield F.C – the oldest football club in the world, as well as the Crucible Theatre where the Snooker World Championship takes place every year, Sheffield is also a great location for sports fans to visit.

No travel visa is required for travellers from the EEA area (and Switzerland) if your trip to the UK will take less than six months. However, non-EEA nationals must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa regardless of how short your visit to the UK is. Once granted, it allows you to explore Sheffield and other amazing locations throughout the UK for up to six months.

Student Visa

With over 60,000 students, including 7,000+ international students, coming to Sheffield annually, we regularly help overseas nationals obtain Student Visas (Tier 4) to complete their education in the city’s top universities – University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.

The Tier 4 (General) Student Visa is applicable to students from both EEA and non-EEA countries. Following Brexit, EU nationals will also need to apply for a Student Visa, as the Erasmus programme is no longer available for the UK.

The UK Student Visa requirements are as follows:

  • Must have an unconditional offer from a university that is on the sponsorship list
  • Must be enrolled on a course that grants you an approved qualification
  • Must genuinely intend to study in the UK
  • Must provide evidence that you can financially support yourself during your studies
  • Must demonstrate B2 level of English as a minimum (exemptions apply)

If you have already completed an undergraduate degree (or higher) in the UK, you may be eligible to apply for a Graduates visa that allows you to live and work in the UK for another two years (3 years for PhD graduates).

Spouse Visa

If you are based in Sheffield and you wish for your spouse or civil partner to join you in the UK, you will need to apply for a Spouse Visa. For your spouse to be eligible, they must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen or a person with settled status
  • Your marriage/civil partnership certificate must be recognised by UK law
  • Must be able to prove that you and your partner have met each other in person at least once
  • Must meet a minimum combined annual income threshold of £18,600 (+ £3,800 more for a first child and a further £2,400 per child for any additional children)
  • Must have suitable accommodation in the UK
  • Must have a certain level of proficiency in English

The Spouse Visa allows you to live and work in the UK for 30 months. You can then apply for an extension to your visa lasting another 30 months. If you still wish to remain in the UK after this 5-year period, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Indefinite Leave to Remain

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a type of settled status that allows you to live and work in the UK without any restrictions. The eligibility criteria include:

  • Must have resided in the UK continuously for a certain number of years (usually five)
  • Must not have broken the law during your stay in the UK
  • Must not have been away from the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period during your UK residency
  • Must successfully complete the Life in the UK test – subjects include UK history, traditions and culture
  • Must prove a minimum of B1 level of English proficiency

The standard period of residency required is five years but if you have been living in the UK under a Tier 1 Investor Visa or Innovator Visa, you could be eligible for ILR earlier – after two to three years.
