A child is automatically British in one of two circumstances:
- British otherwise by descent:
A child born in the UK to one or both parents whom are British themselves, or are settled in the UK at the time when the child is born, is British automatically, as are the children of members of the armed forces when the child is born.
2. British by descent:
British Citizenship may descend for one generation if the child is born abroad from a parent who is British otherwise than by descent. If born from parents who are British by descent, then an application can be made through entitlement if the requirements for registration are met or ask for discretion if there are compelling or exceptional circumstances.
Some children of EEA nationals born in the UK will be British too, depending on when the child was born.
