From 2018, learner drivers will have the option to take motorway driving lessons with an approved driving instructor if they are in a car with dual controls.
The DVLA hope that introducing the change in England, Wales and Scotland will help to teach new drivers how to use motorways safely.
Cartwright King notes that whilst learner drivers will now have the option to experience motorway driving whilst learning to drive;
- Motorway driving will not form part of the test
- Motorways remain the safest part of our road network and the place you are least likely to have an accident.
The driving test changes to take place on Monday 4th December this year are likely to have a much greater impact of safety. They include extended periods of “independent or free” driving, driving under direction of sat nav and changes to reversing manoeuvres bringing the test into line with the strict driving test for heavy goods vehicle drivers.
