World Mental Health Awareness Day 2017

World Mental Health Awareness Day – which is hosted by the World Federation of Mental Health – is an annual event on 10th October. This is an opportunity to help raise awareness of what can be done to ensure that people with mental health problems can live with dignity.

It is believed that one of four adults and one in ten children is likely to experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives. Due to this, it can have a devastatingly negative impact on the lives of tens of millions of people in the UK.

Unfortunately, mental health is not always fully understood and can lead to an insensitive attitude which can make it more difficult for people to seek help. It is therefore estimated that only around a quarter of people with a mental health problem in the UK receive on-going treatment, meaning that most take on mental health issues on their own – seeking help and information where they can.

Alison Ward, Head of Mental Health at Cartwright King is a supporter of World Mental Health Awareness Day and said:

“Workplace well being” is the theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day - a helpful reminder that mental health issues can affect anyone of us. I believe that spreading awareness in this regard is still extremely important as there are still so many stigmas attached to mental illness/psychiatric disorders. I represent people who are, in the main, detained under the Mental Health Act for assessment or treatment and after more than 14 years practice in this area, I never lose sight of the fact that I could easily be in a similar situation myself.”

If you find yourself in a situation where you have been detained, Cartwright King’s Mental Health department are available to assist you. Contact us on either 0808 168 5550 or for more information.
