More about Jamie...

Jamie Nelson initially qualified as a Criminal Defence solicitor and quickly obtained his Duty Solicitor qualification. He then began representing patients detained in hospitals under Part II of the Mental Health Act. Over time the focus of his work shifted from predominantly defence work to helping those detained in hospitals and those subject to the Mental Health Act in the community.

Jamie has experience in representing adolescents detained in hospitals in the North East and East Midlands. He also represents adults detained in all types of mental health units. He has over 10 years of experience representing patients detained in Rampton and Broadmoor High Security Hospitals including a number of people who have been the subject of national media coverage. He advised a patient detained in high security in relation to an appeal against their prison sentence, successfully having it changed to a Hospital Order in the Court of Appeal.

Outside of work Jamie sits as an Associate Hospital Manager for a national healthcare provider, hearing appeals and reviewing the renewal of section for patients detained in hospital. He also sits as an independent person on the Standards Hearing Panel for a District Council. In recent years he has also given a number of guest lectures at Universities in Yorkshire.
