Job Title: Co-Head of Child Care Department

Job Purpose: 

  • You will form an important part of our team, providing expertise to parents, grandparents, other family members, interveners and children directly or through their CAFCASS  appointed Children’s Guardian
  • You will ensure the  Child Care team  provides a quality , first class service
  • You will deliver a smooth and efficient  operation of the department in conjunction with the other Co-Heads

Job Description

  • You will be integral to the development of strategic departmental business plans that stretch and develop your team’s capabilities
  • You will lead and supervise colleagues, to manage appropriate caseload types and complexities, ensuring all aspects of people management are covered whilst championing our core values
  • Covering all aspects of a Child Care workload, your team will provide technical expertise and guidance to external clients in line with quality and compliance requirements
  • Your team will deal with the usual range of Child Care work including and all Legal Aid/CCMS procedures.
  • You will be responsible for driving and supporting  the acquisition of new work for the team and general work allocation 

Responsibilities

Finance and Departmental Performance: Drafting, maintaining and updating strategic departmental business plans. Providing input to the budget process
Providing financial and people management across the team. Attending management meetings. Advising about over capacity or under capacity within the department

People: Championing the CK core values Chairing monthly departmental meetings and 1:1s with staff. Being available to all staff in the department to advise, support and supervise. Ensuring there is full co-operation in the department across all offices. Ensuring work levels are balanced and reasonable. Assisting with recruitment. Identifying department and team training needs. Managing the appraisal process. Managing leave authorisations, sickness and approve expense and overtime claims for the team

Quality and Compliance: Ensuring that work is of a high standard, compliant and billed correctly. Allocating work across the department. Promoting best practice across the department. Providing appropriate resources and support for any audit activity. Ensuring departmental input on improvements and changes to workflow, case management, Law Fusion and systems and processes

Marketing and Business Development: Supporting and driving acquisition of new work to the department. Identifying and reporting opportunities for expansion and acquisition of individuals or teams. Drafting, maintaining and driving the departmental marketing plan

Health and Safety: Complying with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Taking responsibility for their own health and safety and that of others

Person Specification

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • You will be a Child Care Solicitor with at least 10 years PQE (there is no upper limit regarding the amount of experience and applications are invited from even the most experienced candidates)
  • Ideally you will have experience of working in a multi-site, fast-paced legal business, having conducted  all types of Child Care cases
  • Demonstrates a positive, friendly, flexible, and capable manner, and can build relationships quickly with your team
  • Works ethically and sensitively to drive the Firm’s values
  • Has strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Has excellent time management, organisational and computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as document management systems
  • Is able to ensure a high level of service with existing clients in order to secure repeat business
  • Works to ambitious targets with stretching KPI’s and complies and delivers within set deadlines
  • A transferable client base and regional contacts to build the team is highly advantageous
  • A Guardian following and your own networks across the geographical area would be highly advantageous
  • You will have strong business development capabilities
  • Experience of overseeing a team is desirable, however not essential

Education/qualification requirements

  • Must be a Child Care Solicitor with at least 10 years’ PQE in the Child Care field
  • Accredited with the Law Society - Children Panel Accreditation (desirable but not essential)
  • Has ideally led a small team before
  • Must have a clean, valid Practicing Certificate at time of application

  • Is keen to develop themselves with support from the Firm, i.e. putting themselves forward for  appropriate legal awards/recognition
  • Is genuinely passionate about Child Care and delivering a first class legal service 
  • Is emotionally intelligent and can get the best out of their team
