Job Purpose:

  • You will form an important part of our immigration team, dealing with corporate, and private and family  immigration law
  • Providing expertise in both private and business cases
  • You must be able to manage Immigration /EU and British Citizenship applications
  • Assisting with making applications within the UK and from overseas
  • Ensuring the  Immigration Team  provides a first class service

Job Description

  • Covering all aspects of immigration law work, you will provide technical expertise and guidance to team members and external clients
  • You will manage and supervise junior colleagues, i.e. newly qualified solicitors, trainee solicitors and caseworkers/paralegals to manage appropriate caseload types and complexities
  • Assisting with the delivery of appropriate training and development opportunities within the team
  • Varied duties including dealing with a range of Immigration work including: detained clients, victims of trafficking and torture, asylum work from initial applications thorough to Tribunal Appeal and Upper Court Appeal matters, Entry Clearance Application and Appeals, In country Applications and Appeals and Judicial Review cases
  • To develop the department and generate work 

Responsibilities

Organisation: Independently managing your own casework, liaising with clients, providing advice over the phone, by email and other mediums. Analysing large volumes of legal information at speed and with a high level of accuracy. Working to strict deadlines, logically and methodically with a meticulous eye for detail

Client care: Taking a professional a proactive approach to work, with strong client care focus
Dealing with vulnerable clients in a sensitive manner to resolve complicated matters surrounding immigration

Drafting: Preparing draft documents including witness statements and processing evidence
Preparing documents to meet Home Office requirements (including drafting application forms, index of documents and letters of representation

Case types: Managing a varied general immigration caseload, including: 

  • Entry Clearance Applications from abroad – such as Student (Tier 4) or Visit Visas, fiancé/spouse/marriage/civil partner applications, in country Leave to Remain Applications or Extension Applications, Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)/Settlement Applications and Appeals, EEA Applications and Appeals, nationality/citizenship and registration as British Citizens
  • Long Residence Applications (10 year route and 20 year route, travel documents, Family Reunion and Appeals, any other appeal from advising and lodging the Appeal to full representation at court, including Appeals inside the rules and outside the rules, in-country and out of country
  • Employer Sponsorship Licences, Applications and Appeals under the Points Based Schemes – Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 5, advising small businesses and multinational companies seeking skilled staff from overseas
  • Objections to civil penalties and appeals following service of enforcement notices
  • Landlord right to rent checks, Landlord civil penalties
  • Assisting with Home Office compliance visits
  • Asylum Applications and Appeals, fresh asylum claims including Article 8 Family Life, Human Rights Applications and Appeals including Article 8 Family Life, Domestic Violence Applications and Appeals
  • Deportation Applications and Appeals
  • Bail Applications and Hearings
  • Judicial Review cases funded on a private basis

Court: Attending conferences and Court with occasional representation in Tribunals

Growth: Business development and marketing to support the work volumes brought in by the Firm. Demonstrating excellent networking and communication skills with the ability to promote the Firm to generate new business

Commerciality: Ability to apply the Law with a degree of commerciality. Prepared to give your viewpoint to clients in a jargon-free manner. Experienced in delivery of training sessions and workshops/programmes for employers. Understanding of other practices areas that could cross over into Immigration Law

Health and Safety: Complying with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Taking responsibility for their own health and safety and that of others

Person Specification

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Ideally has experience of working in a multi-site, fast-paced legal business in an Immigration Solicitor role working across all areas of individual and commercial immigration
  • You will be an Immigration Solicitor with around 3 -  5 years PQE (there is no upper limit regarding the amount of experience and applications are invited from even the most experienced candidates)
  • Has a working knowledge of Immigration best practice and a good understanding of other practices areas, e.g. employment law, family etc.
  • A transferable client base or regional contacts is highly advantageous
  • You will have strong business development capabilities
  • Experience in own advocacy is an advantage, but not a requirement
  • Demonstrates a positive, friendly, flexible, and capable manner, and can build relationships quickly
  • Works ethically and sensitively to support vulnerable individuals through Immigration processes
  • Has strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Has excellent time management, organisational and computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as document management systems
  • Is familiar with a case management system
  • Strong customer facing and good influencing skills, able to deal with queries both verbally and in written format, in a jargon-free manner
  • Is able to ensure a high level of service with existing clients in order to secure repeat business
  • Stays up-to-date with the latest relevant legislation, policy changes and changes in the Law
  • Remains efficient and productive under pressure
  • Ideally has experience of supporting junior colleagues within a small team
  • Works to ambitious targets with stretching KPI’s and complies and delivers within set deadlines

Education/qualification requirements

  • You will be an Immigration Solicitor with around 3 - 5 years PQE (there is no upper limit regarding the amount of experience and applications are invited from even the most experienced candidates)
  • Accredited with the Law Society (Immigration and Asylum Law Accreditation)  and holds a Level 2 Accredited Advisor and Supervisor under the Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme (desirable but not essential)
  • Must have a clean, valid Practicing Certificate at time of application
