Job Purpose: 

  • To deliver the smooth operation and growth of the Employment Department in line with Firm objectives
  • Providing technical expertise acting on both claimant and respondent cases
  • Advising on all aspects of employment law & HR best practice
  • Managing the employment team on a day to day basis, ensuring the team provides a first class service to it’s clients

  • Manager/client satisfaction
  • Running own caseload with supervision of the employment team
  • Quality of work drafted and completed
  • Time recording targets
  • Costs/fees targets

Job Description

  • Covering all aspects of employment work, you will conduct matters for clients, managing own caseload as well as providing technical expertise and guidance to team members
  • You will manage and supervise solicitors, trainee solicitors and paralegals to manage appropriate caseload types and complexities
  • Assisting with the identification and delivery of appropriate training and development opportunities within the Team
  • Recognise and enable business development opportunities for the department nationally
  • Delivery of a high standard of client care
  • Cross referral of work within the Firm where appropriate
  • Comply with solicitors accounts rules and code of conduct and money laundering regulations in accordance with SRA guidance
  • Manage a varied employment caseload including contentious and non contentious work, settlement agreements, claimant employment litigation, disability and discrimination, sexual harassment, negotiating settlements, Unfair dismissal
  • Growing the team nationally

Responsibilities

Finance and Departmental Performance

  • Draft, maintain and update Departmental business plans
  • Provide input to the budget process
  • Provide financial and people management across the department
  • Attend and contribute to management meetings
  • Advise as to over or under capacity in the department

People

  • Champion the CK core values
  • Chair monthly departmental meetings and 1:1s with staff, engaging & motivating the team
  • Be available to all staff in the department to advise and support 
  • Ensure there is full co-operation in the department across all offices
  • Ensure work levels are balanced and reasonable
  • Assist with recruitment
  • Identify department and staff training needs 
  • Manage the appraisal process 
  • Manage leave authorisations, sickness and approve expense and overtime claims for the department

Quality and Compliance

  • Ensure that work for self and team is of a high standard, compliant and billed correctl
  • Allocate work across the department 
  • Promote best practice across the department
  • Provide appropriate resources and support for any audit activity
  • Ensure departmental input on improvements and changes to workflow, case management, Law Fusion and systems and processes

Marketing and Business Development

  • Support and drive acquisition of new work to the department including webinars & media activity
  • Proactively identify and report opportunities for expansion & acquisition of individuals or teams
  • Draft maintain and drive the departmental marketing plan

Person Specification

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of working in a multi-site, fast-paced legal business in an Employment Solicitor role working across all areas of claimant and defendant matters
  • Working knowledge of HR best practice and a good understanding of Employment law
  • Experience in own advocacy is an advantage
  • Demonstrates a positive, friendly, flexible, and capable manner, and can build relationships quickly
  • Has strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent networking and communication skills with ability to promote the firm to generate new business
  • Has excellent time management, organisational and computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as document management systems
  • Strong customer facing and good influencing skills, able to deal with queries both verbally and in written format, in a jargon-free manner
  • Proven experience of supporting colleagues in a supervisory capacity
  • Works to ambitious targets with stretching KPI’s

Education/qualification requirements

  • Must be an Employment Solicitor with at least 8 years’ PQE
  • Must have clean, valid Practicing Certificate at time of application
  • Advocacy experience is advantageous

  • Is genuinely passionate about Employment and delivering a first class legal service 
  • Has a good sense of humour
