  • The running, management and responsibility of public law children cases, including representation of children (therefore panel membership is a must) in all aspects of such proceedings from Public Law Outline Stage through to disposal stage.
  • Undertaking work representing children under FPR 16.4 appointments
  • Assisting and supporting the team with work, including covering of other people’s matters where needed and working as part of a close knit and mutually supportive team.
  • Undertaking advocacy, including representation of clients at all stages in the court process at including but not exclusively contested/interim hearings, case management hearings, findings of fact hearings and final hearings across all courts (including courts outside of Sheffield).
  • Assisting and supporting the team by sharing knowledge and experience both formally and informally.
  • Networking and liaising with other professionals and enhancing, raising and furthering the profile of Cartwright King and the care team and proactively building the work, including parent work, working for extended family members and working with professional clients.  
  • Understanding and assisting with satellite issues within public law children matters, including, but not exclusively, Deprivation of Liberty, Female genital Mutilation, Forced Marriages, cross jurisdictional applications and Human Right’s Applications
  • Assisting the team with Legal Aid supervision and other duties to assist the team to meet and adhere to legal aid agency requirements and to maintain the Legal Agency contract and other professionals standards such as the Specialist Quality Mark Standard
  • Meeting individual financial and time targets in order to assist the team in reaching their global targets.
  • To maintain the necessary training and collating the relevant experience to remain accredited on the Law Society Children Panel.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of all practice and client documentation and information.
  • Delivering excellent client care

Person Specification

Candidate Requirements:

  • You will have a minimum of 6 years PQE in Child Care Law
  • You should have good experience of legally aided Children Act work (public law) and experience of r16.4 appointments.
  • You will be a member of the Law Society Children’s panel
  • Experience of running your own caseload and acting both with autonomy and as part of a team
  • Experience in the supervision and support of less senior team members
  • Contested advocacy experience is absolutely essential
  • Excellent organisational skills and IT skills
  • Excellent communication skills        
  • Ability to build good working relationships with members of the team and clients
  • Excellent client care skills
  • Good technical knowledge of the law
  • Ability to build relationships with other professionals and third parties 
  • Ability to work under pressure to time and financial targets
  • Confidence to develop own case load and the profile of the Sheffield office specifically and our practice generally via networking, marketing and business development.
  • Professionalism and integrity at all times
  • Friendly and pleasant demeanour and a sense of humour
