As a Tier 1 dependent, you can live, work and study in the UK for the same duration as the main tier 1 visa applicant.
Applying for a Tier 1 Dependent Visa
You can apply for a Tier 1 Dependent visa both from inside and outside of the UK, however, you can not do so if you are currently on a visitor visa.
The dependent visa application process can be complex, as you must meet a number or requirements and you must be able to prove your relation to the main applicant.
Dependent Visa Requirements
If you wish to apply for a dependent visa as an adult, the main visa holder must be either your spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner or same-sex parter. They can:
- Already be living in the UK, or
- In the process of applying for their Tier 1 visa
You can apply for your Tier 1 dependant visa at the same time as your partner, or after them. However, you can not arrive in the UK before they do.
If you are unmarried partners you do need to prove that you have been in a relationship equivalent to a marriage/civil partnership for at least two years.
Maintenance Requirements
As a visa holder you do have to be able to support yourself for the duration of your stay in the UK. You will have to do so without access to public funds.
If you are the dependent of someone with a Tier 1 exceptional talent visa you will not have to meet these maintenance requirements.
English Language Requirements
There are currently no English language requirements for tier 1 dependants.
